Ancient Egyptian civilization is the source of many modern systems and designs used daily in today's world. The "Eye of Horus", which is subject to many designs from tattoo art to wall objects today, is also of Egyptian origin. Derived from the myth of Isis and Osiris, the Eye of Horus has been represented as a sign of prosperity and protection. Since the ancient Egyptians believed that the Eye of Horus had the healing power, they made amulets using materials such as lapis lazuli, gold, and carnelian with this symbol, and used them as jewelry for both the dead and the living. It was believed that the Eye of Horus, also known as Wadjet, provides protection, health and rejuvenation. Even today, the Eye of Horus is used as a symbol of protection.
The Eye of Horus takes its origin from the myth of Set and Osiris. According to the ancient Egyptian belief, Osiris was the king of Egypt and his brother Set had an eye on his throne. One day, Set manages to cheat to kill Osiris and takes the throne. However, Osiris's wife Isis uses magic to temporarily bring her husband back to life and become pregnant with Horus. Isis raises Horus on her own. When Horus grows up, he decides to avenge his father. So Horus and Set fight a series of battles. As a result of these battles, Horus manages to defeat his uncle Set, but loses one of his eyes. There are different versions of Horus' loss of his eye. According to one version, Set tears Horus' eye and threw it into six pieces. According to another version, Horus made a great sacrifice and carved his own eye in order to save his father from death. Horus 'missing eye is magically repaired by Hathor (Horus' wife) or Thoth (god of wisdom).
